The Echosmith Interview - Tour, Family and Being honest with their fans

In 2013 you couldn’t step outside, turn on a car radio or put your playlist on shuffle without hearing that catchy line “I wish that I could be like the cool kids”. The anthem for Indie lovers and pop fanatics alike took the charts by storm, hitting number one in multiple countries and landing a spot on the Billboard top 40. Echosmith, the southern California grown melodic pop trio behind the “Cool Kids” cult following, are back and better than ever with their sophomore album.

The new release titled Lonely Generation hit streaming platforms in January after a seven year album gap since the drop of their debut project Talking Dreams in 2013. The new album blends the same dreamy pop elements that fans are accustomed to with deeply raw lyricism and a well-rounded modern sound. Covering topics from love and loneliness to the sometimes harsh realities of a cyber run world, the true depths of Echosmith are now fully on display. Having just come off of a national tour, we got the chance to speak with Echosmith’s bass player/vocalist Noah Sierota about tours, fans, family and the future.

You just got off of tour with Weathers and Jayden Bartell, how was that?

Tour was an incredible experience, honestly we waited a long time to get back out. You know having put out the record in January and then playing all these shows, some of them in our favorite cities, was a total blast I am so thankful and grateful that we got to get out again and play these songs in front of all these people. It was amazing just seeing how excited our fans were over these new songs and that’s a total gift.

As siblings in a band and on the road together, do you get along well or is it ever difficult?

I think we’ve gotten really good at the whole family road trip thing. Growing up obviously we spent a lot of time together. You kind of learn how to spend extensive amounts of time together and our parents did a good job of leading us, making sure that we love each other, that we were there for each other and that we were all actually friends. So that was obviously helpful and then over time it just gets easier and easier. This tour was really easy, I don’t think I had any moments where I was like “ugh my family is the worst”. We all know how to give each other space when necessary.

7 years between album releases, were you surprised at all by the incredible feedback from listeners? was it nerve wracking at all?

Honestly, you never know, there’s always that tentative fear that comes with making new music. I think a lot of people generally refer to the first album or single that they’ve heard and compare everything to that, but as an artist I still like to honor the past and move forward and create on things in a new way. I think there’s is a bit of fear that has come with it but I am absolutely shocked and amazed with the way people have connected to these songs. I am blown away by the feedback we have been getting not only online, but at our shows as well.

You made a video for every song on the new album, tell me about that experience.

it’s something we had always wanted to do but of course that is very difficult, it was a lot of work on our part, a lot of work on our team’s part and also a lot of work finding people that were willing to hunker down and get a lot of work done in a short amount of time. thankfully We found Danny Drysdale who did these videos and we just worked together for a little over a week and shot all twelve of the videos then. We spent a lot of time planning beforehand because obviously that’s necessary but its been really cool to see how the stories from any of these songs can be presented in a visual form.

What would like new listeners to know about your new music before they hear the album?

We want to make art that represents our movement through life. We want to be honest, real and open about our experiences as human beings and we try to lay that out in our music. We push ourselves a lot to make music that means a lot to us, that’s something we are always working on and are excited about. We are stoked on this record and we hope they are too.
