104 year old Artist Carmen Herrera designs East Harlem mural
Carmen Herrera, the Cuban-American artist who’s abstract minimalist pieces have become known worldwide for their beauty and simplicity is set to create a mural in East Harlem with the help of Publicolor. Just sixteen years ago, the then 89 year old sold her first painting and gained recognition in the Cuban community for her artwork. From that point it was all uphill for Carmen, seven years later her work would be applauded by the masses as it graced shows in NYC and the UK.
Carmen’s famous words “I never met a straight line I didn’t like” (2010) have been a verbal confirmation for her retrospective and pleasing visuals. At 104 years old the young at heart artist is no close to stopping than she was over seven decades ago when she started.
In just a few short months Carmen’s next piece will be available to the public and you won’t even have to get a MOMA ticket to witness it first hand., All you’ll need is a ride to East Harlem. on April 18th students from Manhattan East school for Arts and Academics are set to start on the outdoor mural hoping to finish by the end of May. The Piece is a modification of a piece from 1987 now titled “Uno, dos, tres”.
The importance of this mural is not lost on community members and art lovers alike. East Harlem residents have had their fair share of hardships, the piece was created with the thought in mind to bring a display of beauty to the lives of people in this strong and ever-growing community.
