M60 - Manchester Rock Like You've Never Heard Before
Noel Gallagher himself once said “The thing about Manchester is.. it all comes from here”. No truer statement could be made when referring to the indie rock scene. The magic in that Northern England water has produced some of the biggest acts to come out of the UK from The Stone Roses to the kings themselves, Oasis. Next up on the fast track to the alternative throne is none other than M60.
Think about any garage-band music lovers dream, marry it with quality production, lyricism and some undeniably lovely Manc accents and you’ve got M60. The group itself is comprised of four integral pieces, Matthew Morton on vocals, Sam Mansfield on lead guitar, Bradley Smith on drums and Charlie Howarth on bass. Previous releases such as ‘I Don’t Mind’, with catchy melodic sounds and unmistakably indie lyricism, have put the band on display in-and-out of the Manchester music scene. We got ahold of their smooth voiced vocalist Matthew Morton to get a bit more information on the melodic indie ensemble.
What’s the inspiration behind the name "M60?
Matt: The name was coined when we were 15 after spending hours just brain storming absolute nonsense and then we stumbled across M60. It is the ring road that goes around Manchester, at the time we just settled and since then it has just stuck.
How would you personally describe your sound?
Matt: Its just straight up indie rock, we're always going for catchy riffs and choruses you can't help but sing along to.
Tell me a bit about your creative process? Do you usually collaborate in lyric writing or is it one member more so?
Matt: The creative process usually begins with me coming up with a little idea at home and then I will take it into practice with the lads and start mouth singing the riff I want Sam to play like a mad man, Sam loves it of course. Then we piece it all together as a band but it's usually missing a bridge, because bridges are absolutely not my most natural thing to write, so we jam on that and usually come up with it together
If you could tell new listeners one thing about M60, what would you want them to know?
Matt: I’d say its riff-led noise you can dance about to. It’s catchy, the aim of every chorus is that you could belt it out anywhere, that’s the idea behind it.
