Tips for cheap flights

Tips for cheap flights

I’m getting ready for a road trip this evening so this is just a quick rundown of anything i could think of to save that money! Happy travels.

  • Delete search history

In the big year of 2019 we’ve pretty much all discovered one way of another that your web browser is stalking you. Whether it be from getting ads for a product you googled last week or having those oddly specific tee shirt designs show up on your Facebook timeline, we know it’s happening. Before searching for flights make sure you clear your browser and then again every time you search, you’re not crazy. Those prices have definitely gone up.

  • Don’t be afraid of layovers

One of my favorite things to do is book flights with long layovers. In particular the Iceland layover through icelandair that gives you 12 or more hours in the country, it’s basically a free trip. Every once in a while you’ll come across a flight that is a few hundred dollars cheaper just because it has a long layover. This usually gives you plenty of time to get out of the airport and explore the city before your next flight. I always try to give myself at least 2 hours before my flight takes off to check in on domestic flights and 3 hours on international long hauls. Bearing that in mind, on a 6 hour layover that usually gives me plenty of time to get off the plane, go on a self guided tour of the city and be back at the airport to check in. Some airports worldwide will actually provide you with a free tour of the city on long layovers. Make sure to research that option before landing at your connecting airport and also map how far the city is from the airport to give you plenty of time if you decide to go it alone.

  • Be flexible (if possible)

This isn’t always on option considering most people have obligations or jobs and need set dates to travel. However, if you have the availability always try to book your flights around the cheapest times to go rather than trying to book the cheapest flights available on your dates. Most airlines websites will provide you with the cheapest flights in any given month, so will google flights as well as many other third party apps.

  • Use points and sign up with airlines

I know, it can be a pain to give out your information signing up for every airlines rewards programs but it truly pays off. If you don’t mind adding lines of credit many airlines have partnerships with credit card companies, if you’re a frequent flyer these truly rack up. American Express has granted me many discounted and free flights over the years, as have American Airlines and Alaska airlines just by using my rewards number when i book.

  • Fly without luggage

Besides the fact that having only a carry on will often provide you with $25-50 in savings anytime you fly, some flights are actually cheaper if you refuse the checked bag option. With that being said some smaller aircraft flights don’t even allow carry ons meaning you have to check your carry on bag for free. Always make sure your read the fine print when searching flights. Packing light might just save you some money.

  • 3rd party apps

I cannot stress this enough. Download skyscanner. Do it now. It will save you money i can guarantee. There are plenty of 3rd party apps and websites that scan through every flight worldwide and give you the cheapest rates on the cheapest days to fly. Skyscanner is my favorite alongside Airefare Watchdog that will inform you of airline pricing mishaps that could potentially get you a free flight.

  • Book now

Its unlikely that prices will go down. There’s only been a handful of times in my life that a flight has actually gotten cheaper from waiting, it’s not worth the risk. Book as soon as possible.

  • Dont take the flight.

Yes, you read that right. Don’t take the flight, airlines overbook constantly and in the event that they need customers to opt out of their current flight to take another one they often reward you handsomely. Usually you won’t find out until you’re at the check in desk waiting to board so always get the details on the next flight they can send you out on before agreeing. I try to do this as often as possible if I’m not in a rush to reach my destination. I’ve been rewarded with $1000 flight vouchers, free hotel stays and gift cards. If i have to wait longer than an hour they’ve always given me a free meal voucher and if i press hard enough they’ve given me access to the vip lounge. Keep in mind that although you’re being rewarded you’re still doing the airline a favor. Don’t be rude but never be afraid to negotiate, most often you’ll get extra perks just by asking nicely.
