Food Through the Columbia Gorge
Pretty much every chance i get while visiting Oregon I’ll be traveling through the gorgeous Columbia gorge. Over the course of a few hundred drives (literally) I’ve managed to find some great spots in the river nestled cities off the highway. Here’s just a few of my favorites for all my Oregon friends, or anyone who’s lucky enough to make the trip through my favorite part of the state, to try.
The Glass onion - Goldendale
Growing up i spent quite a lot of time in the small town of Goldendale but only recently discovered this little gem. We stopped in on a warm spring afternoon and were immediately greeted by a friendly waitress and warm atmosphere. The decor in the restaurant is adorable as is the large porch outside. One of my new favorite summer day spots to hangout. If it’s still available i recommend the Meatball sandwich, incredible. The waitress was even kind enough to make me a fresh Virgin margarita with no mix since I had a long drive ahead, not sure how she did it but it was amazing.
Monagons pancake house - Hood river
Just the other day on my way through town i was feigning for some coffee and brunch. At 2:30 in the afternoon i thought it might be hard to come by but Monagons provided. I would go so far as to say the apple waffle i ordered was the best I’ve ever had. With so many great things on the menu from pancakes to blintzes you’ll be sure to find something to love. The super kind wait staff and adorable old country styled decor made me feel right at home on my long solo trip.
River dawgs - Umatilla
I’m especially proud of this one since it’s a new addition to my home county. Until the day i walked into river dawgs i had no idea that cream cheese on a hot dog even existed, let alone was the greatest idea ever. We ordered the crooked dogs and chatted to the very friendly owners. I was super happy with the fact that their hot dogs are all beef since i dont eat pork and finding a hot dog without it isn’t always easy. I’ll definitely be returning, possibly every day of my life.
Sunshine mill - the Dalles
It’s been a while since I’ve visited sunshine mill in the Dalles but it’s still one of my favorite spots on the gorge. A cute location and open beautiful atmosphere makes for a perfect afternoon in this winery tasting room. The charcuterie board style presentation is perfect for an afternoon of catching up with friends or taking a relaxing moment on your drive through.
Pfriem family brewers - Hood river
Pfriem didn’t only make the list because their stouts are my favorite. The food at this beautifully located and decorated establishment is all the more reason to love it. I heavily recommend the Smokey mac and cheese if you get the chance to try it. Friendly service and a great atmosphere will always keep me coming back to this gorgeous Columbia Gorge Brewery.
